4-H Sheep Project

4-H Sheep Project

Romeo and Juliet were their names. For some reason, I ended up with two sheep after the fair a long time ago. You know the story, kids get attached and don't want to sell their project and they ended up in my horse pasture. They were good pets for Kaleb when he was little but that experience does not make me an expert on owning or raising sheep. I'm not gonna tell you how to raise your lamb but here are some good resources to help you out.

Ohio State University has a great page about Sheep Care. There are lots of videos and tips for everything from choosing a show lamb to showmanship and everything in between. I recommend that everyone check out this site if you are in the sheep project or thinking about it for next year.

Michigan State has a series of articles for those of you that are thinking about trying the sheep project for the first time.

Texas A&T Extension has a great 4-H Show Lamb Guide in a PDF that might be handy to have on hand.

The Texas Youth Livestock page also has some great information on the 4-H Sheep Project.

Here is a Lamb Care activity.

If you have ever wondered what they are looking for in the ultrasound here is a guide to explain the Lamb Carcass Value Evaluation.

The real question is... What else can I do with the sheep project?  Here are a couple of ideas.
1. Learn to use your sheep's wool. You can spin the wool into yarn or felt the wool. These projects are so fun to see at the fair.
2. Put your woodworking skills to the test by building a hay or grain feeder. There are tons of examples of DIY feeders. This would be a great exhibit for the fair also.
3. Make a rope halter for your lamb.
4. If you know how to sew or would like to learn how making a sheep blanket would be a great project. here is a link to how to make a Lamb Blanket
