4-H Knitting Project

Knitting!

Alright guys and gals, we are entering unknown territory for me.
I am a crafter through and through but this is a project I have never tried. I do have a few friends that knit and they helped me with this post.
If you are looking to learn how to knit and don't have anyone around to teach you there are lots of resources out there that can help you. There are several 4-H Knitting Handbooks that can help get you started.
This one is a PDF from Utah 4-H, The 4-H Knitting Handbook
Oregon 4-H offers the 4-H Knitting Skills PDF.
Both of these cover everything from types of yarn, stitches and how to care for knitted items.

Maybe watching videos is a better choice for you. Well, there are so many to pick from so I thought I'd share the ones that I liked the best.

Finger knitting seems like a great place to start. Check out this video How to Finger Knit and here is a How-To Figer Knit A Beanie video. I think I'm going to try making this beanie while stuck at home.

If you have needles and yarn are ready to get to work here is a post on the blog Imagination Soup that has several videos for how to start cast on knitting. Of all the ones I watched, this seems best for a real beginner like myself.
There are also lots of knitting and crafting websites that have free patterns and articles. You may want to check out these two, All Free Knitting and The Spruce Crafts.

If anyone is interested in the art of spinning wool or felting I have a great resource that would love to show you how she creates works of art from her sheep wool.
This is my Aunt Nancy, she raises sheep, spins their wool and knits her yarn into beautiful creations.

There are several community service projects for those that enjoy knitting like making beanies for cancer patients, blankets for newborns or homeless and you can even knit to help out animals. Check out https://www.knotsoflove.org/ Up America, it has several project ideas and they except unfinished squares that will get added to others to make bigger projects. Knots of Love is an organization that collects hats and blankets for babies and cancer patients.

Whatever you decide to do with your 4-H knitting project be sure to share all about it at your club meetings, at the fair and in the comments on this blog. Happy Knitting 4-Hers!
