The Horse Of Course!

What now? The horse of course!

If you know me you know that I am horse CRAZY!
Let me introduce my babies!
Otis is almost a year old (his birthday is on 3/31 and there will be a party). He is 1/2 Arabian and 1/2 Oldenburg. This is a picture of him a few weeks ago, it got warm enough to give him a bath and he was feeling good after. When he grows up I will show him in dressage and do horse trials with him.
This is Uncle Hash! He is a 10-year-old Quarter Horse and does everything with a smile. I got him when he was a year old and he was supposed to be my mounted shooting horse but it turns out he is my best friend! He is a shooting horse but he also jumps, fox hunts and this summer I will take him to a horse trial or two. We trail ride a few days a week on the family farm dragging Otis everywhere we go!

Now that you have met my boys, let's see what the 4-H Horse Project looks like to you. Most will think of going to 4-H Horse Shows as the main part of the project but there is so much more you can do!! Learning about horses is very important if you have a horse or if you think you would like to have one in the future. Things like parts of the horse, grooming, nutrition, and parasites are all important topics that could be a demonstration at a meeting (Facebook Live or Zoom these days) or a poster/display for the fair. But the fun doesn't have to stop there! You could learn how to make a rope halter, grooming/tack box, saddle rack or homemade horse cookies and show that at the fair. I think horses make excellent subjects for creative writing projects and photography too. If you have any horse project questions let me know, there is nothing that I like to talk about more!!

Here are a few resources to get you started!

Ideas for posters!

Remember that the horse project is year-round and the learning never ends so show off what you know!
