Community Service
Community service an important part of all 4-H projects and in times like this, there is even a larger need for communities to work together and take care of one another. The tricky part is, social distancing while doing community service.
4-H Feeding Missouri is a program where 4-H members work together around the state to collect food and money for food pantries so let's start there!
Many people in the community have lost their jobs or their hours have been cut back because so many businesses are having to close their doors. This means the need for stocked food pantries will be even more important in the coming weeks. Another factor is that while so many people are stocking their own kitchens they may be less likely to make donations.
So what can 4-Hers do?
1. Look through your kitchen and see is there are a couple things you could drop off at a food pantry. If you are worried about going into the food pantries then call ahead and see if they will take curbside donations.
2. Have chickens that lay too many eggs? Share them with someone that needs them and if you don't know who might be in need as a 4-H leader for ideas.
3. Make signs to hang at grocery stores to remind people to pick up a few things for the area food pantries, including food pantry names, addresses and hours to make it easy for people to make donations.
4. Maybe you know an elderly person in your neighborhood, ask them if they need anything or share a meal with them. Yup, that is community service!
How can you show off your efforts at the fair or at 4-H meetings once they start back up? Of course, you can make a poster, write a story, take pictures, give a demonstration of how to cook a meal you shared or use your public speaking skills to tell your story in a speech.
